The ILT20 produced chaos in Abu Dhabi once again, but nothing grabbed attention like Nicholas Pooran’s stunning choice to not claim a regulation stumping. In a format built on innovation and unpredictability, this one still left jaws on the floor, sparking a fierce debate over intent, sportsmanship, and the shifting ethics of modern T20 cricket.
Tactics? Oneupmanship?

Nicholas Pooran chose not to stump Max Holden, but the Vipers had a trick up their sleeve as well, retiring the batter the very next ball.

Desert Vipers were struggling for rhythm against MI Emirates. Max Holden came in at No. 3 after Andries Gous retired hurt, but the innings stalled. Holden laboured to 42 off 36 deliveries, and by 15.5 overs, the Vipers were stuck at 117/1, crying out for momentum. Then came the flashpoint.
Rashid Khan sent down a short, wide ball that Holden stretched for but missed, leaving his foot outside the crease. Pooran gathered it cleanly — the stumping was there, waiting, routine. Any keeper would have flicked the bails in one motion. Pooran didn’t. He hesitated, held the ball, and watched Holden stroll back into safety. The commentary box didn’t know what to say, Rashid’s expression said plenty, and fans instantly split into two camps.
Minutes later, the story deepened. Despite the reprieve, Holden was retired out at the end of the over, replaced by Sam Curran. From there, the tempo flipped — Hetmyer and Dan Lawrence unleashed a late surge that dragged the Vipers to 159/4, a score that proved just enough in a dramatic one-run victory.
A non-stumping. A retired-out gamble. A one-run result.
T20 cricket, once again, refuses to be predictable.
