Rana, who made his T20I debut in January 2025, has steadily become a part of India’s white-ball setup and has earned selection in the 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup, which is being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The tournament presents a major opportunity for the Delhi-born pacer to strengthen his claim in the national side and play a role in India’s title defence on home soil.

Since making his international debut in 2024, Rana has impressed with his raw pace and knack for picking up wickets, even as he has faced intense scrutiny and trolling on social media. Despite the external noise, his rise through the ranks has been one of the notable stories in India’s fast-bowling pipeline.

However, Rana’s place in the playing XI remains a talking point. Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel left the young pacer out of his preferred starting XI for the World Cup, opting instead for experience. Speaking on Star Sports, Patel said he would open India’s bowling with Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh.

“My playing XI for the first game will be Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma at No. 3 and No. 4, then Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Rinku Singh and Axar Patel,” Patel said.

“Then Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy. That will be my playing XI. I would like to include both Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah,” he added.

India will begin their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the USA on February 7 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
